I always thought that the hair type includes straight hair, body wave, curly wave, water wave, kinky curly and Afro curly. These hair type words are widely used in the hair trading. After i searched lots of information, i finally understand the question my customer asked.
May be you have ever wondered why the curly hair looks different between curly gals. Many people are confused about that. In this article, we will talk about hair type. Once you know what your hair type really is, you will know what hair care products you will need.
Andre Walker, a hair stylist, has created a widely used hair classification system.
* Type 1: Straight hair- 1a, 1b, 1c
* Type 2: Wavy hair- 2a, 2b, 2c
* Type 3: Curly hair- 3a, 3b, 3c
* Type 4: Coily Hair- 4a, 4b, 4c
A hair is that straight without any wavy or curls.
1a-- Fine/thin straight hair, which is very soft, thin, hard to hold a curl, hair trends to be oily and hard to damage.
1b-- Medium straight, which is more thicker and volume than 1a type and can be curled.
1c-- Straight(Coarse), which means bone straight and hard to curl.
A hair that is not completely straight nor curly. It goes from loose waves to thicker waves in the shape of “S”. The hair is usually flat at the root and with more waves in the lower part of hair, usually below the ears. It shrinkage goes from 5% to 10%.
2a-- Thin waves with a smooth texture. Various styles can be made. Definite”S” pattern. Hair care products such as mousse and a light gel are suggested.
2b-- Its waves seems like it’s made with a curling iron. Hair trends to be frizzy. The waves form an “S” from the center of the hair down to the bottom of the ear.
2c-- The hair waves are more thicker and more prone to frizz all over the head.
When this type of hair is wet, it looks pretty straight. When it dries, the hair goes back to being curly. This kind of hair has a tight curl. It has a combination of textures and the shrinkage goes from 20% to 50%.
3a-- The curls are big and loose. They are tight spiral. Its shrinkage goes 20%.
3b-- Elastic curls in different sizes.The curls are very curly, thick and bushy.It shranks 30% to 40%. This type of hair is recommended to use some oil to reduce frizz and a "firming cream" for more clarity
3c-- This type hair means curls-coily. They are very very tight and densely curled. Type 3c is the type with the largest shrinkage and volume. It’s a closed loop. It shrank by 50%.
This type of hair is very tight and more fragile than other types. It is the driest curl hair of all, which get tangled easily.
4a-- The features of this type hair are very fragile and tightly coiled. And it has a more defined curly pattern “S”.
4b-- 4b type hair has tighter curl than 4a. It doubles sharp angles for “Z” pattern.
4c-- Someone say 4c looks same as 4b except that the curls are more tighter and kinked.
Different hair products for different curl types. There are four primary types of curls: loose, medium curls, tight curls and kinky curls.
Loose curls-- loose curls need to use the shampoos and conditioners that retain elasticity and moisture. And the detangling products and styling gel will help you maintain the curls all day.
Medium curls-- medium curls need to choose a PH-balanced shampoo and conditioner that provides plenty of moisture. And leave-in conditioners and styling gels are also required.
Tight curls-- tight curls shrink significantly as the hair dries. You need to buy a moisturizer that never strip your natural oils.
Kinky curls-- kinky curly hair are usually quite rough, and they’re denser than most other types of curls. You need the protein-added products to rebuild your hair cuticle.
